The lake is on the Kabinakagami River and is part of the James Bay drainage basin. It is located northwest of the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve, and about 17 kilometres southwest of the settlement of Oba and kilometres southwest of the town of on: Algoma District, Ontario.
Lake on the east and the height of land between the Magpie and Kabina kagami rivers on the west. The area covered is approximately square miles. Generally rugged terrain with high hills and ridges marks the height of land between the Magpie and Kabinakagami rivers. The northeast portion is generally low and swampy, a characteristic that continues easterly past Mosambik Lake to Esnagi Lake.
Kabinakagami Lake (Indian translation of "lake of many bays")is the largest in the Algoma District and is the headwaters of the Albany River system.
